At 11:00 AM, a special guided tour with archaeologist Mariangela Catuogno exploring the female role in the ancient world—through myth, daily life, and power.
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Pithecusae Archaeological Museum in Lacco Ameno joins the initiative promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture, opening its doors for free to all women on Sunday, March 8, 2026.
This initiative is not only a symbolic tribute but a celebration of the female universe with a special guided tour led by archaeologist Mariangela Catuogno, starting at 11:00 AM. Participants will follow a path that tells the story of women’s private and public lives in antiquity, through the extraordinary collections preserved at the museum on Ischia.
Jewelry, mirrors, amulets, domestic utensils, and decorated kraters with figurative and iconic motifs will help visitors understand the evolution of women’s social roles, the freedoms they were granted, and the differences among local, Greek, and Roman women.
The halls of the Pithecusae Museum thus become pivotal points in a narrative journey dedicated to the historical and cultural roots of women in past civilizations.
“Celebrating March 8 at the Museum means turning a holiday into an experience of cultural enrichment,” says archaeologist Mariangela Catuogno.
“The goal of this special visit, as with others held over the years, is to bring the local community—not just tourists—closer to the Museum’s heritage. This heritage is not only connected to its most famous artifacts, such as the Cup of Nestor or the Shipwreck Krater, but also includes a wider range of objects, each with its own story, simple or complex, waiting to be told. Often, these are everyday items primarily used by women.”
“Art and archaeology teach us that history was also written by women, often behind the scenes, through powerful symbols passed down over time,” states Deputy Mayor and Culture Councillor Carla Tufano.
“I hope this day and our initiative invite all women to reclaim the beauty and historical memory preserved in our Museum.”
