Marty Supreme, a film directed by Josh Safdie, is set in 1950s New York and tells the story of Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet), an ambitious, reckless young man with an unbridled passion for table tennis.
Working in the back room of a cobbler’s shop, Marty dreams of becoming a star in the emerging world of ping pong and patents his own ball, the Marty Supreme, a symbol of his determination and his desire to rise in a world that does not believe in his abilities. Table tennis becomes his way out, a language through which he redefines himself and asserts his identity.
His frenetic life swings between scams, gambling, forbidden passions, and dreams of glory, taking him beyond the borders of his neighborhood to cities such as London, Tokyo, and Paris, with the goal of turning a personal passion into an internationally recognized career. Marty is a mix of romanticism and unshakable optimism, ready to challenge every limit in pursuit of glory.
And he succeeds—becoming a table tennis champion, winning 22 titles, and earning recognition as the oldest winner of a national competition at the age of 67. With a frantic and overwhelming style, the film is a visual and narrative explosion that blends adrenaline, irony, and emotional tension, offering the portrait of an eccentric, fiercely ambitious, and legendary character, willing to go through hell itself to make his mark in the world of ping pong.
