An ensemble that celebrates the role of public education as a place for artistic development, personal growth, and cultural exchange.

The symphonic concert season promoted by the Walton Foundation continues to attract enthusiastic audiences at La Mortella Gardens in Ischia, under the artistic direction of Caroline Howard.

On Thursday, 23 July at 9:00 pm, the stunning setting of the Greek Theatre will welcome the Symphony Orchestra of the "Carlo Tenca" Music High School of Milan, conducted by Marco Bossi. The orchestra is one of the most interesting youth ensembles on the Italian musical scene, committed to celebrating the role of public education as a space for artistic training, personal development, and cultural sharing.

The Carlo Tenca State High School in Milan, an institution with more than a century of history and home since 2010 to one of Italy's leading music high schools, involves around 200 students in the study of music alongside their academic education.

Founded in 2021 from the desire to rediscover the joy of making music together after the years of the pandemic, the Symphony Orchestra now brings together around 70 young musicians from all year groups and with varying levels of experience. The project was conceived first and foremost as an educational workshop: a year-long journey in which students develop both as musicians and as individuals, guided by a team of teachers who design a learning path tailored to the abilities and potential of each participant.

The orchestra's particularly diverse instrumentation requires constant work in adaptation and arrangement, aimed at highlighting the unique tonal qualities of every instrument while ensuring that each musician plays a meaningful role. The results achieved reflect the success of this educational approach: the orchestra won the First Absolute Prize and the award for Best Orchestra at the 12th International Competition "Città di Palmanova" – UNESCO Prize 2024, in addition to receiving further recognition at the "Scuole in Musica" National Competition in Verona.

The programme selected for the concert at La Mortella Gardens will take the audience on a journey through cinema, literature, and imagination. Opening the evening will be H.O.L.S.T. – Harmony of Light, Space and Time, a lyrical-symphonic suite inspired by three major works of Gustav Holst: Beni Mora, the Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda, and the celebrated orchestral cycle The Planets. Through a blend of Eastern, spiritual, and cosmic influences, the work introduces audiences to the English composer's musical universe, reflecting his fascination with different cultures, mythology, and the boundless realms of human imagination. The programme will then continue with a selection of iconic film scores, from the epic soundscapes of El Cid and Lawrence of Arabia to the adventurous spirit of Indiana Jones.

The appearance of the Symphony Orchestra of the Carlo Tenca Music High School at La Mortella Gardens perfectly reflects the mission of the William Walton Foundation and La Mortella: to provide young musicians with a prestigious stage while supporting music as a means of connection, education, and building the future.
