SYNOPSIS
The Flatlands, directed by Francesco Sossai, is set in Italy's Veneto region and follows Carlobianchi and Doriano (Sergio Romano and Pierpaolo Capovilla), two lifelong friends in their fifties who still cling stubbornly to the illusion of eternal adolescence.
Their lives revolve around late-night drinking sessions, endless evenings that stretch into dawn, and dreams that have long since blurred. Broke and aimless, they remain devoted to a single sacred ritual: one last drink, moving from bar to bar, as though the bottom of a glass might still hold the meaning they've been searching for.
On one such night, they unexpectedly cross paths with Giulio (Filippo Scotti), a kind-hearted architecture student with an idealistic outlook on life.
What begins as a chance encounter soon turns into a surreal road trip across the vast, flat landscapes of the Venetian plain, winding through deserted roundabouts, neon-lit streets, and long stretches of silence broken only by the hum of an aging car. Alongside his two unlikely companions, Giulio gradually discovers a different way of looking at the world, at love, and at his own future.
A bittersweet road movie infused with gentle humor, The Flatlands unfolds at the unhurried pace of a hangover slowly fading away, leaving behind the lingering taste of hard-earned truth.
