Amarga Navidad, a film directed by Pedro Almodóvar, tells the alternating story of two narratives.
The first centers on Elsa, a commercial advertising director, in 2004, during the long December holiday period. The second takes place in 2026 and focuses on Raúl, a screenwriter and director who is writing a script that we will soon discover is the story of Elsa, her partner Bonifacio, and her friends Patricia and Natalia.
Blended with fiction, Elsa somehow becomes Raúl’s alter ego, as he turns to autofiction as a response to a long period of creative dryness. Looking inside himself, Raúl is also drawn to the people who make up his closest personal world: his partner and his assistant.
The film explores the close connection between reality and fiction, inspiration and life, and offers a reflection on the limits of autofiction.
